Silicates Mineral – Rose Quartz

The Mineral Rock
The most important chemical group of minerals, silicates make up about 25% of all known minerals and 40% of the most common ones. As well as being a major mineral component of the Earth, they are also significant constituents of lunar samples and meteorites. Quartz, feldspar, and mica, the predominant competent of granite, are silicates.

With a color unique among gems, rose quartz is probably the most popular of the quartz varieties. Its pink hues have adorned ornaments and jewelry for centuries. Most rose quartz is found in the cores of pegmatites. It is nearly always found in massive or lump form, crystals are extremely rare. The translucent or transparent pink variety of crystalline quartz, known as rose quartz will seldom exceed ½” in length. The cause of rose quartz’s pink tine is thought to be due to tiny impurities of manganese, titanium or iron. Care must be taken, because it is heat sensitive and can fade to gray with prolonged exposure to air or sunlight.

Like other forms of quartz, rose quartz is also prone to inclusions. Rutile needles can create asterism, but most asterisms appear when light is shown on a stone, with rose quartz the asterism is only visible when light is viewed through the stone. Most rose quartz is too cloudy to be faceted and instead is cut as a cabochon, beads or carved into a wide range of ornaments. Transparent specimens who are as pale as to almost colorless are very rare and valuable.

The Legend & Traditions
According to legend, Eros brought rose quartz to the earth in the hope that its beautiful color would arouse love and desire among people. Rose quartz is said to have traditional properties to improve sleep, stimulate blood flow and circulation; psychologically, it is said to strengthen friendships, combat lovesickness and open the mind to beautiful things. It symbolizes trust, love, peace and happiness, gentleness, and aiding the affairs of the heart and healing emotional wounds. Rose quartz is linked with the sun sign of Taurus.

What is in Words – Creative Trends

How are the latest trends in fashion, jewelry or even home décor determined? How are they described and what makes them stand out? Does someone have a crystal ball? If so, I’m sure I’m not the only one who wants a sneak peek into the future! Every designer rather fashion, jewelry or home décor all have their sources and arsenal of research, magazines, books, websites, and sources. It all depends on who you are, what you are designing, what materials you are working with, and what impact you want to have on the industry and your customers.

For me, resources are just about everywhere with a few websites, books and magazines as my closely guarded secrets. A colors palette from which many things inspired and created is often a result of nature and the way those creations are described is to arouse some sense or memory within us. Some of the strongest choices in the fashion and jewelry industry are dominated by a solid natural color that is then split up into various emerging tones. For example, take the stable color black which is often split up and recreated as metallic, midnight, charcoal, or described as urban metal. Blue is often refracted as cool, crisp and described as lofty winds and fluffy clouds or spa like hues; while red is portrayed as fiery fiesta, spicy, sizzling, and hot.

As consumers, we identify with these words and colors because of a memory, feeling or sense. To take it a step further, look at how most designers describe their creations; ‘Calming cool blue hues of the Caribbean Seas’, ‘Pale shades of rich soft orchids’, ‘A lazy summer lemonade mixture in yellow, orange and cream’, or ‘Exploding fusion of black and fiery red’. All of these phrases suggest some sort of memory of holidays and vacations, childhood and family, overwhelming feelings, or even present day living.

It’s all how the colors and materials are brought together in a combination of complementary or outspoken bold pieces that are eye-catching to the consumer. It’s the make-up of these combinations that makes a color palette feel modern, memorable and unique. As a jewelry designer, a combination is a good way to think about how you go about choosing jewelry materials that will spark your own imagination, bringing out a uniquely individual flare to a design.

What nature gives us to work with is a start to some grand creations, leaving endless possibilities in ones imagination. Start your arsenal of creativity by taking the time to really study, research and understand your designer colors and materials.

Jewelry Trend Watch: What’s Hot for Fall 2010

What’s hot for some people isn’t always considered hot for everyone, which means the trends in fashion, jewelry or even home décor and paint are changing with every season. Most people stay within their comfort zone, while others are watching with great anticipation for the latest trends in magazines, TV and the runways. For fall 2010, the jewelry trends are mixing it up slightly, more a mix of cross-fashion confections. Read on and determine your own trendy style as predicted by the experts.

If you are one who is into bold statements then this fall season is just for you. According to the runways, fashion magazines and websites, big, bold and eye-catching statement necklaces are going to be all the rage. For added spice, heat it up by stepping out with mixed metal and non-symmetrical looks. This means mixing it up with jewelry designs that feature multi-layers in stones, beads and chains mingled together; the more unique and unusual the better the look.

Sizzling mixes in metals is going to be another big trend and with the price of sterling silver and gold higher than ever before many designers are moving towards untraditional metals such as copper, brass, antique plated metals, and colored overly metals. For more versatility, many are blending textured or burnished patterns of plated metal into designs in place of the expensive traditional and contemporary shiny metals of sterling and gold.

Earrings step it up this fall season with much longer lengths; though small to medium earrings will remain the staple for some, the move is toward much longer looks. The look will be toward 2”-3” chandeliers made of links, chains, clusters, and charms in fashionable earrings. The key for the jewelry designer will be to keep these longer earrings lightweight, fresh and colorful.

Last but not least it appears that all roads this fall are leading back to complete sets; as in matching necklace, earrings and bracelets for an entire ensemble and less about the mixing and matching from multiple pieces of seasons past.

As with all trending watches, whatever your style it’s about the color and feeling comfortable that you’ve completed and captured the look you are going for. Whether it’s casual to classic, chic to trendy, spicy to bold, make your own statement and step out to any event in confidence.
